BVC: Abbreviation for bottom vertical coils
CASAA: Consumer Advocacy for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association. It is a non-profit organization that campaigns for the rights of e-cig users.
Cigalike: An electronic cigarette having a similar form factor as a traditional cigarette (Blu or NJoy,Fuze there are dozens of these). Generally considered to be the bottom of the ladder as far as build quality and vape quality in electronic cigarettes.
Clapton Coil: A coil made with a large gauge of wire wrapped tightly by a smaller gauge of wire, like a guitar string.
Clearomizer, Clearo: A cartomizer that is made of a clear material (usually plastic or glass) so that the user can see the quantity of e-juice remaining in the unit.
Cloud, Clouds, Blowing Clouds: The vapor that is exhaled when smoking electronic cigarettes. Generally referred to as clouds when very dense due to the high water content in the exhaled vapor.
Coil Winder: A tool used to wrap perfect coils every time.
Deck: The flat base area where the positive and negative posts sit on an RBA/RDA, which is designed to keep e-juice off of the battery connection. Some have a small raised lip on the outside edge to prevent e-juice from running down off of the deck.
DIY: Do it yourself.
Dripping, Drip: Putting e-juice directly on the atomizer coils.
Drip Tip: A mouthpiece accessory with an opening that allows drops of e-liquid to be dripped directly to the atomizer/cartomizer without the removal of the tip.
Dry Burn: Purposely firing an atomizer on a battery without e-liquid to saturate it, which results in the heating up, and glowing of the coil. This allows the cleaning of the coil by burning off impurities.
E-juice, E-liquid,Juice: The liquid which produces the vapor in an electronic cigarette. VG, PG, Nicotine, natural and artificial flavoring in varying percentages / combinations are the ingredients used in making e-juices.
Hybrid, Hybrid Mod: A combined RDA and battery holder (many of these are Mechanical) designed to fit together as one seamless unit.
Juice Well: A largish cup-like part of an RBA that is somewhere between a lip machined on the deck and a full tank.
Kanthal, Kanthal A1: Kanthal is a specific brand of resistance wire that is used in building coils for electronic cigarettes, usually sold for Rebuildables. Kanthal A1 is a specific grade of Kanthal wire which is considered by many to be the best wire for use in coils.
Lung Hit: Alternative to mouth-to-lung hits, lung hits are inhales of vapor straight to the lungs. Usually requires massive airflow.
mAh: Abbreviation for Milliampere-hour, which is used to describe the capacity or energy charge that a battery will hold before it needs to be recharged.
Mechanical Mod, Mech Mod, Mech: An electronic cigarette that (traditionally) does not have any electronics or wiring (some “mechs” do have wires), it is just a metal tube with a mechanical switch that holds a battery and a connector for a RDA or tank (if not a Hybrid mod) of some sort.
Micro coil: A type of wire coil where the coil is wrapped so that the loops of the coil are all touching, requiring more wraps than a traditional coil.
Mod: Commonly used to refer to any vaping device that is not a cigalike.
Mouth to lung hit:Vapor is pulled into the mouth first and then inhaled into the lungs. Can provide more flavor in the mouth.
Nichrome Wire: The resistance wire used in atomizer coils. Patented in 1905, it is made from nickel, chromium, and (often) iron. A common ratio is 80% nickel to 20% chromium. Generally considered the inferior of the two commonly used atomizer coil materials in cartomizers/clearomizers/atomizers.
Ni200/Nickel Wire:Wire that is pure nickel, it has very low resistance and is used with temperature controlled mods. Never use Ni200 with regular VW.
Nicotine (Nic) : The substance found within traditional and electronic cigarettes that creates a pleasant sensation. An alkaloid found in tobacco and other plants of the nightshade family, it is available in various strengths, but also optional as some e liquids have the option of no nicotine.
Nicotine/Nic Level: The designated amount of nicotine per cartridge. The nicotine level is the amount of nicotine present in a cartridge or bottle of e-liquid. It is usually measured in mg/ml.
Ohm (Ω):The standard unit of electrical resistance. A lower number indicates lower resistance and therefore faster heating.
Parallel:Batteries are wired into a mod parallel to each other, increasing battery life at the cost of voltage.
Pass-though, PT: An alternate way of powering an electronic cigarette where the unit is connected directly to a power source other than a battery, and can be used while charging.
Propylene Glycol, PG: An ingredient in e-juice that produces Throat Hit and carries flavor better than Vegetable Glycerine. Physically much thinner than VG. Can also be used as a nicotine suspension agent.
Priming the Coil:The act of preparing a wick to vape, usually done by adding a few drops and soaking the wick in e-juice or taking a few pulls without heating the coil. This is not relevant for drippers/drip-style atomizers.
RBA: Rebuildable Atomizer (user serviceable parts). Generally referred to as an RBA when it has a tank or large juice well that does not require dripping of liquid directly onto the coil.
RDA: Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer.
RTA: Rebuildable Tank Atomizer.
Rebuildables: RBA/RDA/RTA units.
Resistance: The measurement of ohms that allows you to calculate the right amount of voltage to apply to get the best wattage necessary. It comes in two common different variations; low and standard.
Ribbon Kanthal, Ribbon Wire, Ribbon: A specific type of resistance “wire” used for building coils. Ribbon wire has a flat cross section rather than round, as with traditional wire.
Series: Batteries are wired into a mod in series, increasing voltage at the cost of battery life.
Steeping: Allowing your e-liquid to sit either open to the air, or in a sealed container. This is generally not necessary in e-liquid that has a high ratio of PG to VG. It is more often necessary in high VG ratio juices.
Sub-ohm Coil: A coil or coils with an ohm reading below 1.0
Sub-Ohming: The practice by experienced vapers of increasing the current from the specific battery, and by reducing the ohms of the coils below “one” to achieve massive vaping clouds.
Tank: The part that holds the e-juice.
Throat Hit (sometimes seen as TH): The sensation on the back of the throat akin to what is felt when smoking a traditional cigarette.
Topper: A device that goes on top of an electronic cigarette battery/battery holder (Atomizers, Cartomizers, Clearomizers, RBAs RDAs, etc.).
Tube Mod: Any Mod that comes in a tube shape about the size of a small flashlight.
Vape, Vaping: The act of using an electronic cigarette.
Vaper: Someone who uses an electronic cigarette.
Vegetable Glycerine, VG: Used in e-juice to produce vapor. Much smoother than propylene glycol. Physically much thicker than PG. Can be used as a nicotine suspension agent.
VV/VW Mod: Any Mod that allows the user to control the voltage/wattage output of their device.
Watt (wattage): The amount of raw heat that the atomizer coil uses to vaporize your e-liquid.
Wick: Wicks are used to deliver e-juice to the coil in electronic cigarettes. Most atomizers use a wick of some sort. Most commonly made from silica cord, wick can also be made from rolled up steel mesh, ceramic, fiberglass, cotton, or a host of other materials.
Wire: Generally refers to resistance wire used in building coils for atomizers.
